What’s in Season – Spring

What Flowers are in season in Spring

With the long awaited arrival of Spring (from March – May in the UK), comes the return of some of our favourite blooms! So this month we’re going to look at what flowers are in season in Spring and the wonderful blooms that can be incorporated for a Spring Wedding.

Narcissus/Daffodil

Named after a well-known Greek myth and the National Flower of Wales and most known for their beautiful shade of buttery yellow and sweet scent. Narcissus actually come in a wide variety of shades of yellow and orange. As well as a wide range of sizes, from the miniature varieties to the large, double headed varieties.

Tulips

When asked “what flowers are in season in Spring” most people will say Daffodils but then undoubtedly Tulips will be a close second. Available in almost every colour, Tulips are a florist favourite in our workshop. Back in Spring 2023 we were lucky enough to flower T&H’s wedding at Wasing Park, which featured the most beautifully blooming Spring flowers (including Tulips, Anemones, Icelandic Poppies and Ranunculus).

Bluebells

One of the first signs of spring is seeing the little Bluebells pop up in your wooded areas. Although we don’t typically use them in floristry, there are many alternatives that have a similar look and feel, such as Muscari (flowering April-May) and Hyacinth (flowering September – November).

Icelandic Poppies

Arriving at the workshop with it’s recognisable bloom hiding inside a hairy, bowl shaped, seed head, over the next few days (ensuring the workshop is the ideal temperature and environment) this tricky, but rewarding bloom will start to open and display its intense orange, white and pale-yellow petals. We love to feature these in Bridal Bouquets for the added ‘wow factor’ and delicate and dainty appearance. This Spring we were lucky enough to feature Icelandic Poppies for L&J at the sunny Notley Abbey. The sun was shining, and the flowers were singing!

Ranunculus

First introduced into Europe in the 16th century, Ranunculus are a Brides favourite for many reasons. Available in a wide range of colours and varieties including Butterfly Ranunculus and Pom Pom Ranunculus. We love to use these beautiful blooms in weddings (especially Bridal Bouquets); Ranunculus and Anemones were featured heavily in a wedding we created at the lovely Stanlake Park, showcasing both Yellow Butterfly Ranunculus and White Round Headed Ranunculus.

Colour palettes

When planning Spring wedding florals it’s important to take into consideration the colours that are available around that time of year and what flowers are in season in Spring. This helps to create a wedding day that is cohesive with the seasons. Spring flowers offer a wide scope of colour palettes ranging from softer pastel colours to more bold colour palettes including deep blue, orange, red and purple.

We love to use seasonal flowers and foliage within our weddings as much as possible for many reasons, but mainly because the blooms look their happiest and healthiest! If you’re planning a Spring Wedding and want to talk through what flowers are in season in Spring to create your perfect Wedding flower arrangements, we’d love to hear from you.
